Workshops

Preserving Our History, Empowering Health Advocates Today

David Perez, Jose Gutierrez, Jose Ramirez, Esther Hidalgo, LGBT Latino History Project

This workshop will equip participants with various techniques to preserve their history as a means to building stronger community activists and educate the community about HIV/AIDS in Gay and Latino communities. Presenters will bring a variety perspectives including historical preservation expertise, the experience of living with HIV, HIV community prevention and education as well as program management and fundraising perspectives. Members of the Latino GLBT History Project have documented stories, flyers, posters and other memorabilia about public health issues, including HIV/AIDS from metropolitan Washington, D.C. since the 1980s. We annually educate over 1,000 students, youth, non-profit leaders, and the general public about the history of the Latino LGBT community--including the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
